Hi Wally, First I'd like to say that you always have excellent tips and reports I've read your article in your blog about tunning the rig for the conditions and I have some doubts about this rig tune issue. How do you know if the rig tension is right for the conditions? What are you looking for when you change it, any visual clue? I'm not a professional sailor, so it's a little more difficult to check this correctly. Thanks a lot.

As a "poverty stricken" twilight racer here in Tasmania, I still like to getthe best out of my 24' masthead rigged Van De Stadt. My problem is that myno.1 headsail has a pronounced hook in the last 2 inches of the leech. Thesail works well and we point at least as high as most of our competitors. Is such a hook a serious speed issue , or is it merely a cosmetic problem? If it is a major speed impediment , what is the best (and cheapest)solution?Cheers from Hobart!

Q:
I own an Australian Northshore 33 cruiser/racer and interested in targetspeeds. I could not get any joy from sourcing the polars from the company orthe designer but thought it should be possible to derive it by logging thewind speed and dircetion and boat speed into some software via NMEA (I haveboat speed instrument, Raymarine ST60 wind, ST4000 autopilot interfaced andwith NMEA and serial interface box). Is there any software that could dothat or can you recomend an approach to collect the data and generate thetarget speeds.Enjoy your comments and thanks.
Q:
I am racing on a J-110 (bowsprit with asymmetrical spinnakers). Ipreviously raced on a C&C 30 with symmetrical chutes, and am experiencedwith spinnaker changes (peeling) with symmetrical spinnakers. I am not sureif there is a "standard method" of changing spinnakers on bowsprit boats. It is impossible to reach the clews to change sheets, thus it seems to methat I would need to use a 2nd set of spinnaker sheets (sheet plus lazysheet combination) to make it work, plus a 2nd set of aft turning blocks. Is there a standard method, or am I better off just changing chutesbare-poled?
Q:
I have just bought a toni tio optimist sail.i used your sharkskin sail very successfully last year. I bought a new blackgold rig to go with the new sail and I am not going as fast as I did withthe sharkskin and an older optipart rig.How should I tune the boat differently. How slack should the luff tension be in moderate winds ? I rake the mast at282-284 cm should this be different as I am not pointing as high as before.Im sure it is just a set up problem but I have gone from 40 to 56 in therankings with the new equipment. Q:
Do telltales on the leech of the jib/genoa aid in trim? I have heard twoschools of thought and am still undecided as to which is correct.(School #1) Many say that leech telltales have no use on a headsail and anyinformation they provide is unreliable at best. Luff telltales for the jib,and leech telltales for the main is the way to go since its really all onebig sail.(School #2) Some believe that jib leech telltales are beneficial to trim. Itwill let you know if there is flow seperation prior to the leech. Jib sheettension should never be so much that the leech tale so much as flutters. Ifthe leech telltale does start to stall then you need to either ease thesheet, or move the jib lead back twisting the top of the sail andre-establish flow.Do leech tales on the headsail help? If so, are they beneficial on jibs andoverlapping genoas? Thanks for any advice.
