Quantum’s Cruising Guru: Captain Jack Klang
Jack has owned and loved boats all of his life. At age eighteen he earned his first U.S. Coast Guard captain’s license. Forty-seven years later he continues to be a licensed Master (for 50 ton power and sail vessels). His logbook contains over 30,000 sailing miles on the Great Lakes, along the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean.
After retiring as an educator, Jack turned to writing and speaking about sailing full time. He has authored three books, written a syndicated newspaper column and a monthly magazine feature all about boating. His speaking career has included appearances on the television series Michigan Boater and the video magazine Sailing Quarterly with Gary Jobson.
Captain Klang has taught for the American Sailing Association, served as a charter captain and developed many useful techniques for cruising sailors. His extensive cruising experience is the basis for many of his seminar topics. Of all his accomplishments on the water, he is most proud of the Rescue Medal awarded to him by the U.S. Yacht Racing Union for saving six lives in three different open water rescues.
Captain Klang appears at the Quantum booth at many boat shows throughout the year. With his knowledge and humor, he has developed a large following of cruising sailors who attend his seminars.
